Yesterday my brother introduced me to a great new game, which has a linux client.
Before I go into any further details, I have to tell you that the game is currently in Beta. I was lucky enough to get a key from my brother, so that I could join the game online. I'm not sure how easy/difficult it is to get these keys.
OK, on to my little review :)
The name is Heroes of Newerth ( http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/ ), and it basically is a stand-alone Dota. The same guys that created the Dota Map for Warcraft 3, S2 Games, have decided to create a stand-alone client of the game, and so you dont need Warcraft 3 to play it anymore.
The game is essencially still Dota, but there are a couple of key differences.
First thing I noticed is the graphics and animation, It's really good, really smooth, and just feels right, and on my machine, the game runs beautifully in Ubuntu.
Since I played Dota a couple of years ago, I'm quite rusty, and I was having a hard time initially. Especially figuring out the items in the shop and hero abilities. Most of the Items are basically the same, but they have diffirent names, and recipes. Many of the old heroes are in the game, but of course, their names have changed etc.
On my Ubuntu machine, I did not encounter any bugs, other than the ones that the windows client also has. I also tested the in-game voice over chat, and it works great, without me having to set anything up. A friend mentioned however, that the voice from my side is a bit crackly, but I suspect that's a issue with my hardware in ubuntu, and not the game itself, since I could hear other players normally. Other than the bit of crackle, they could hear me fine.
Overall this game is Awsome, and I'm really happy that it includes a Linux Client. I certainly think that Ubuntu and Linux Gamers should give this game a go, and while at it submit bugs etc (since it's still in Beta).
Have fun!
